“The third space of bilingualism” –
Crossing and blurring the language border on the example of German-Polish language mixing phenomena

Abstract
The intense language contact often leads to creative building of mixed language forms and constructions established and practised in the spontaneous everyday language routine. Such language mixing phenomena show that language use in the multilingual contexts provides scope for permeability between language systems. From this perspective, I consider the emergence of language mixing phenomena as a result of the opening and crossing of language borders. But what does it actually mean to open, cross or dissolve a language border? How can these concepts be described and explained in a linguistic analysis? What processes take place at the language border between two languages in contact, and what are the structural consequences of these dynamic phenomena?
These and more questions will be explored using the German-Polish language contact situation as an example. The aim of the presentation is to evaluate and discuss German-Polish language mixing data with a particular focus on the character of the language border at different structural points of language switch. For this purpose, I will propose an analysis model which incorporates the term of the border with its three dimensions – durability, permeability and liminality – into the analysis of language mixing phenomena.
